Cytat:

Dear All,
In an effort to keep you all best informed, we've decided to do a quick 'rumour control' round up about Shogun 2.
This semi-regular feature is where we take top stories, rumours and gossip and try and shed some light on them before release.
Sometimes rumours about a given feature get a life of their own or a little bit of imagination is applied and can lead to misassumptions.
And sometimes, yes, even we get a bit excited and say too much.
We love the anticipation around Shogun 2, its part of the buzz of developing the game. And whilst Shogun 2 is going to be the definitive Total War experience it's important we communicate the detail accurately.
So without further ado, here's Kieran…
Diplomacy
We've seen a few different ideas floating around about the 'hostage' or prisoner system, and how it works.
To clear it up, essentially any clan is able to offer its families heirs as prisoners to another clan in a bid to cement an alliance or friendship.
These heirs are voluntarily given as prisoners, a practice that was not unheard of at the time. So as to say essentially:
"Should we go to war, you may kill my child."
A pretty heavy bargaining chip in any negotiation.
Ideas on 'prisoner exchange' and other such things are just ideas, good ones, but ideas nonetheless.
AI
Shogun 2's Campaign and Battle AI are one of the key areas of focus for us during development.
We've consistently said that AI is one of our 'hygiene factors'. This means it has some of the greatest focus before going out the door and that it receives constant attention and testing.
What we're looking for most of all, is a fun, robust experience and a real challenge from your computer opponents on the battlefield and the campaign map. We're also aiming for there to be a real sense of opposition, whatever your skill level.
Perfection is the wrong word; it leads people to expect their version of perfect and for all of us that’s unique. Because perfect means always acting exactly as desired in any unique context.
The AI in Shogun 2 is shaping up to be the strongest in the entire Total War series. That said, as with all other games, it's not going to be HAL 9000 or Skynet, and we wouldn't want people thinking that.
Honour and Loyalty
The honour and loyalty system are two separate parts of the same whole (How very Zen).
Imagine your clan's honour as its overall score or rating, not dissimilar to prestige in Empire.
Your clan’s honour affects how other clans perceive you and their attitudes toward you diplomatically.
It also affects your own clan internally, and one of the things it affects is the loyalty of your generals.
A Generals loyalty can rise and fall; there are ways to manipulate it positively, for example giving them positions of state as a reward for their endeavours, or negatively; Such as demanding they commit seppuku for their transgressions.
Loyalty of individuals, of course, also affects your overall honour rating, either in a virtuous or a vicious circle.
As with previous TW games, if a character is feeling disgruntled at your leadership and the right offer is made in their ear at the right time...Allegiances of characters can change.
Naval & Land Battles:
This is one of those where terminology can confuse a feature.
Naval battles in Shogun 2 will feature land for the first time. That land will include rocks, reefs, shoals and islands.
All of this must be navigated and fought over by your vessels and used against your enemies.
It's an awesome tactical addition.
We aren't yet at the stage where you can control land and naval units at the same time and we won't be for Shogun 2.
It's one of our eventual goals for the engine, and the big leap forward in Shogun 2 is the addition of actual land mass into the naval engagements.
We are also working on what we call 'two stage naval assaults' where you can control the navy in the first battle and, if successful, control your landed troops in a separate second battle on the shore.
This represents what we hope will be another jump forward in gameplay for Shogun 2.
As with everything in development details may change as we reach final stages of development. After all just like all battle plans, no design remains entirely intact after implementation.
Multiplayer
Shogun 2's multiplayer will be a massive evolution on previous Total War games.
Not a lot has been said about multiplayer yet, and that's for a reason.
Many of the multiplayer options present in Napoleon, including multiplayer campaign will be present out of the box with Shogun 2.
We're also working on some very big new innovations in the multiplayer game for Shogun 2's release and they're currently undergoing a lot of testing and balancing before we start talking about them.
These additions are genuinely huge and seeing them develop is great. We need to hold back on commenting a little longer until some of the biggest new modes are tested.
So that's a roundup of some of the points we thought important to elucidate.
No doubt there will be more as we show more of Shogun 2 to you. As always, please use our forum to post questions to the team and we'll try and do another roundup of the biggest 'need to know' areas soon.
Kind regards,
Kieran
